New Results for Two Optically Faint Low Mass X-Ray Binary Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
We present optical photometry of the low mass X-ray binary systems GX 349+2 (=X1702-363) and Ser X-1 (=X1837+049). Extensive V RI photometry of the faint optical counterpart (V = 18.4) to GX 349+2 reveals a period of 22.5 ± 0.1 h and halfamplitude 0.2 mag. This result confirms and extends our previously reported 22 h period (Wachter & Margon 1996). No color change is detected over the orbit, although the limits are modest. We also report the discovery of two new variable stars in the field of GX 349+2, including a probable W UMa system. Ser X-1 is one of the most intense persistent X-ray burst sources known. It is also one of only three burst systems for which simultaneous optical and X-ray bursts have been observed. The faint blue optical counterpart MM Ser (B ∼ 19.2) has long been known to have a companion 2.1 distant. Our images indicate that MM Ser is itself a further superposition of two stars, separated by only 1. At the very least, the ratio of inferred burst to quiescent optical flux is affected by the discovery of this additional component. In the worst case, the wrong object may have previously been assumed as the optical counterpart. Subject headings: stars: individual (GX 349+2, MM Ser) — stars: variables: other — X-rays: stars

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملLuminous X-ray Flares from Low Mass X-ray Binary Candidates in the Early-type Galaxy Ngc
We report results of the first search specifically targeting short-timescale X-ray flares from low-mass X-ray binaries in an early-type galaxy. A new method for flare detection is presented. In NGC 4697, the nearest, optically luminous, X-ray faint elliptical galaxy, 3 out of 157 sources are found to display flares at > 99.95% probability, and all show more than one flare. Two sources are coinc...
متن کاملDeep Chandra & Hubble Observations of Ngc 4697, the Nearest Optically Luminous, X-ray Faint Elliptical Galaxy
With NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, we have accumulated over two days of data from NGC 4697, the nearest optically luminous, X-ray faint elliptical galaxy. These observations provide one of the deepest views of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs; binary stars, with one normal star with M.MSun and either a neutron star or black hole, which emit profuse amounts of X-rays) in an elliptical galaxy. ...
متن کاملRecent Results on the Anomalous X–ray Pulsars
∼ 50 accreting pulsars in X–ray binaries have massive companion stars. They are therefore classified as High Mass X–ray Binaries (HMXRB). In most cases this is based on the observation of their optical counterparts. Ten X–ray pulsars are optically identified with OB supergiant stars, while Be companions have been found for ∼20 pulsars. Many of the optically unidentified X–ray pulsars are inferr...
متن کاملX - ray emission properties of galaxies in Abell 3128
We use archival Chandra X-Ray Observatory data to investigate X-ray emission from early-type galaxies in the rich z = 0.06 cluster Abell 3128. By combining the X-ray count-rates from an input list of optically-selected galaxies, we obtain a statistical detection of X-ray flux, unbiased by X-ray selection limits. Using 87 galaxies with reliable Chandra data, X-ray emission is detected for galaxi...
